A Mammoth of a Palooza!

If you are looking for a fun outdoor Palooza near Tucson, hook up your trailer and UTV and head out to Mammoth, AZ. You will enjoy exploring the desert in a unique way by driving in a sandy wash through desert canyons, and under an old Rail Road bridge. You might even see a herd of deer like we did!So if you are ready, hop in your UTV and lets go!

Mammoth is located on Highway 77 between Tucson and Globe just north of San Manuel.

We are going to be driving in the Tucson Wash. This is an easy to moderate four wheeling trip. Drive through Mammoth to Camino Rio Rd. It stops a few yards back and there is room to unload your UTV there.

We took some friends from out of town and all piled in.

The wash is down the dirt road to the south. Once you get to the wash, just follow along and explore as you go. One of the first things you will see is an old RR bridge.

It was interesting to look at as we drove underneath. The wash is wide and fun to pick up speed as we drove along.

At times there were high cliffs on either side that gave shade and pretty views. A lot of these rocks were just calling for a climb or hike, but we didn’t take our adventure to the next level. Oh well, maybe you can bring some climbing gear and do that when you go.

We saw a watering hole in the distance up a side road, and decided to go up and check it out.

This cow met us up there and wanted his picture taken :). I took a few shots of the watering hole. I don’t know, but water and food in a desert just kind of looks like an oasis to me!

The vegetation and wild life were amazing here. I felt like I was in the Saguaro National monument at times because of all of the beautiful cacti. The Arizona deserts are far from a barren wasteland of sand.

I’m sorry about the low quality photos on these few shots, but some were taken at quite a distance and my iPhone needs a telescopic lens. Hmmmm…. Valentines gift maybe? Hint, hint!

Here are two shots of some very out of focus deer that we saw. There was a whole herd of them in the middle of the road when we turned a corner, but of course immediately ran up the side of the canyon when they heard the noise of the UTV.

Our friend, Andrew, had an especially fun time spotting interesting things along the way. He spotted an old skeleton of a deer head that he picked up to show us all.

He also thought he saw a tree with sap or water coming from it, but it was just animal droppings!

Most of the wash was flat and very easy to drive on, especially at the beginning.

But there were some parts that were a bit more rocky, especially if you explored a side road or two

Here are a few more shots of the pretty rocks and landscapes you are going to see on this Palooza.
